Welcome to the Junk research group website. The research group is comprised of a multicultural, multinational group who are a hard working bunch of chemistry research students. Over the years, PhD and Honours students have come from a multitude of countries including Australia, Lebanon, Germany, Greece, Singapore, Belarus, Philippines, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Iran, Vietnam, Iraq, Bangladesh, China, Ireland and France. We welcome potential PhD students from all over the globe!
Our research is currently conducted in a medium sized laboratory and we work on highly air-sensitive lanthanoid compounds, so most of our work is performed either on Schlenk lines or in inert atmosphere dry-boxes. This trains all students in techniques that are rather demanding, but after perfecting these techniques, most others are very easy to carry out. We have access to single crystal X-ray diffractometers, X-ray powder diffractometers, infrared spectroscopy, and multi-nuclear NMR capabilities to fully characterize our compounds using contemporary analytical methods.
Our research into highly reactive organolanthanoid compounds finds applications in chemical reactivity with small molecules leading to interesting organic transformations and catalysis, while our air stable work extends to luminescence and corrosion inhibition. We are also very interested in the fundamentals of the lanthanoids, where we probe the properties of these extremely interesting elements to gain more understanding of the formally ignored group of metals.
Many of our students spend some time (up to six months) overseas working in our collaborators research groups in various institutions in Germany, France, UK and US. These exchange programs with collaborators enable our students to experience other research laboratories, new techniques and different chemistry, all while living in a new country along with different cultures. Many international friendships have arisen form these exchanges.
In 2017, we will be moving to a new building, The Science Place (see: XXXXXXXX) where our laboratories will be state-of-the-art and will be an exciting transition.
The Junk group is a social bunch. We enjoy playing football on Friday afternoons, attending group functions, including bbqs at the boss's house where we all bring along dishes that provide an insight to our cuisine from back home.
In these pages you will find links to our recent publications, photos of group activities, attendance at conferences, and news emanating from our group. We hope you enjoy and if you're looking for a fun place to do your PhD where you will get research papers in high quality international journals, complete your candidature in good time, then you've landed in the right place.
